 of everyday life spin out as hilarious vignettes. In a rare visit to NYC from Minneapolis, she's at P. S. 122 from Jan. 17-23. With deadpan aplomb she explores the celebrity identities people adopt--from Elvis impersonators to karaoke singers--in her 50-minute Faker. The star of the show, Karen Sherman, embodies the rock-concert drum solo with her pumping fists, air-guitar poses, and ferocious attitude. She's a gender-blurring lounge lizard in her white jumpsuit, as Kristin Van Loon loon, common name for migratory aquatic birds found in fresh- and saltwater in the colder parts of the Northern Hemisphere. Its strange, laughing call carries for great distances. Like the grebes, loons float low in the water and their legs are placed far back. They are expert swimmers and divers, sometimes slipping below the surface to swim underwater, but they cannot walk on land and at nesting time must use bill and wings to inch along. and Joanna Furnans shake their go-go fringe behind her.
