Kao Confirms that Sphingosine Plays Key Role in Maintaining Good Skin Condition.

: 4452) has successfully elucidated the mechanism of sphingosine sphingosine /sphin·go·sine/ (sfing´go-sen) a long-chain, monounsaturated, aliphatic amino alcohol found in sphingolipids.

 lipid. Specifically, the company has confirmed that sphingosine has a property to align the lamellar structure of the intercellular lipid accurately so that it helps maintain the skin's moisture level.

Further, Kao has developed a ceramide complex that functions in the same manner as sphingosine. When applied to the skin, the newly developed substance can improve the skin's barrier function, increase the moisture content of the stratum corneum, and improve the skin condition.

Kao will strive to develop skincare products by leveraging these findings. Also, the company presented details of the research at the 30th annual meeting of the Japanese Cosmetic Science Society held in Tokyo in June.
