Kalmar Industries Chooses CATIA V5 for Heavy Equipment.

Business and High Tech Editors

STOCKHOLM, Sweden--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 27, 2001

World's Leading Supplier of Mobile Equipment Adopts the

Flagship Solution of Dassault Systemes Dassault Systemes (Dassault Systèmes S.A.) (Pronounced - Dasoh) (NASDAQ: DASTY; Euronext: 13065) is a leading company specializing in 3D and PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) software.  and IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries) , CATIA A family of 2D and 3D CAD programs from IBM. CATIA was one of the first CAD programs to provide 3D solid modeling. The program was developed by Dassault Systems, a French aerospace company. ,

with the Support of Semcon IT Solutions

Kalmar Industries, a part of the Partek group, has acquired forty CATIA V5 installed workstations, for the whole of its group. The decision to shift from a 2D to a 3D computer assisted design was taken by the Austrian company in spring 2000.

After in-depth evaluation of several CAD systems, the CATIA V5 by Dassault Systemes and IBM was judged to be the best adapted to the growth and development of the group. Each solution was tested by designers based on the ease and accuracy of creating a steering axle axle

design. This method provided the production team with comparable underlying material with which to evaluate the competing applications.

"It is too early to be able to say how important the efficiency and financial gains will be, but we know that we will save money, become more effective and reach the market faster with CATIA V5", said Mats Karlsson, project leader for Kalmar Industries.

Kalmar also believed that Semcon, as implementation partner, would be able to provide considerable value through its understanding of both Kalmar's way of working and of CATIA. The decision was taken to implement CATIA V5 as Kalmar group's common CAD system.

"It creates greater efficiency within the whole group because we now have a common platform", says Mats Karlsson, who is project manager at Kalmar Industries. "Some of our installations had old systems, meaning that we could only work in 2D. With CATIA V5, we are able to work in 3D throughout the entire organization."

Par Nobring, project manager at Semcon, says "CATIA V5 is perfectly adapted to Kalmar Industries' operations, thanks to the functionality that V5 provides. CATIA V5 supports the whole process of an engineering company, including design, computations, manufacture, information management and simulations".

CATIA V5 is currently used at Kalmar Industries for computations, analysis and simulation in the creation of new product series of various types of fork-lift trucks fork-lift truck

. This first takes place in 3D in order to then create underlying production material in the form of drawings in both 3D and 2D. One works with different modules, such as a base module for 3D and 2D (MD2), collision analyses (SPA), visibility field analyses (NAV See navigation system and navigation bar. ) and sheet metal design (SMD (1) (Storage Module Device) A high-performance hard disk interface used with minis and mainframes that transfers data in the 1-4 MBytes/sec range (SMD-E provides highest rate). ), as well as STEP for communication with subcontractors.

In addition to CATIA enabling the discovery of collisions and to include processing at an early stage, there exists distinct time-savings when working, for example, with sheet metal design. Another decisive quality for Kalmar Industries has been the possibility to simulate visibility fields from a fork-lift truck driver's cab. Different countries have different legal requirements for the content of this visibility field, which are easy to simulate with the aid of visibility field analysis. "We are naturally very pleased and proud that Kalmar Industries chose CATIA V5. It demonstrates that the need for advanced and flexible systems such as CATIA V5 are to be found equally well in small and medium-sized companies as in large groups", says Raimo Nikkila, who is Nordic Manager for PLM (Product Life cycle Management) A comprehensive information system that coordinates all aspects of a product from initial concept to its eventual retirement.
