Kada Systems extends support of Java 2 standards with latest version

JavaOne Worldwide Developer Conference--Kada(TM) Systems, a leading provider of solutions that enable Java(R) applications for mobile e-business, today announced availability of version 1.5 of the Kada Mobile Platform(TM) (Kada Mobile(TM)) for the Pocket PC and the PalmOS. In addition to the new operating system and device support, Kada Mobile 1.5 also features increased portability across database platforms including Sybase Ultra Lite, PointBase Micro 4.0 and Oracle 9i Lite. With the release of Kada Mobile 1.5, the company makes it possible for Java developers to build and deploy fully functional Java 2 mobile e-business applications across operating system, device and database platforms.

To meet the specialized needs of deploying Java applications to smart handheld devices, Kada Systems has incorporated a number of improvements to the overall functionality of Kada Mobile. These enhancements impact all three areas of the Kada Mobile Platform, including the company's clean room implementation of a Java Virtual Machine (JVM), supported APIs and the Kada Mobile Developer Studio.

What's New

--The Kada Virtual Machine - With version 1.5, the Kada Virtual Machine offers a full-function VM supporting a wide variety of mobile devices. In addition to support for the Pocket PC operating system, the Kada VM runs on Motorola Dragonball, ARM, SH3, SH4 and MIPS processors. These processor capabilities enable the Kada VM to support functions such as floating point, JNI (Java Native Interface) and an adaptive JIT complier to operate on PalmOS devices such as Palm Pilot, Handspring Visor and Sony CLIE as well as Pocket PC compatible mobile handhelds such as iPAQ, HP Jornado and Cassiopeia. The company plans to support the EPOC OS, RIM Platforms and Linux over the next year. Kada offers the industry's smallest and most complete Java Virtual Machine implementation ranging from 155KB to 380KB.

--Kada APIs - Kada Mobile 1.5 offers a complete set of clean room APIs that support the Java 2 specifications on mobile devices. This includes support of java.security, java.rmi, java.sql and java.math and JDBC compatibility, which enables Java application development and deployment with Sybase Ultra Lite, PointBase Micro 4.0 and Oracle 9i Lite database technologies portable across operating systems. Within its Java 2 support, Kada delivers both CDC and CLDC configurations on a single environment. Specifically, this release introduces MIDP (Mobile Internet Device Profile) capabilities - supporting javax.microedition packages, .lcdui, .midlet and .rms and javax.microedition.io support. The company's clean room implementation of the Java CDC and CLDC APIs requires less than one MB of memory, including the application and database, to run full function graphical database applications on the target device.

--The Kada Mobile Developer Studio - Allows developers to tune and optimize applications prior to deployment on smart handheld devices. In version 1.5, improvements to the Kada Ahead-of-Time Compiler, Kada Minimizer and Kada Installer can increase application performance by an order of magnitude. The company has also developed additional APIs unique to Kada Mobile that enable infrared beaming between devices (Palm to Palm, Pocket PC to Pocket PC and Palm to Pocket PC), alarm management and serial port access.

Pricing and Availability

Kada Mobile 1.5 for the PalmOS and Pocket PC is available via an early access program now and will be generally available in late June. Versions supporting EPOC, RIM and embedded Linux are planned. Pricing for developer kits start at $295 for a single developer license and additional subscription plans are available through the company.
