KYRGYZSTAN - Prime Minister Kurmanbek Bakiyev Salievich.


Prime Minister since Dec. 21, 2000, Bakiyev is an ethnic Kyrgyz from the Masadan village, in Suzak region, of Jalal Abad province. Also a former Soviet apparatchik, he took office in January 2001 and replaced Amangeldy Muraliyev. Bakiyev is known for his loyalty to the president.

Born on Aug. 1, 1949, Bakiyev graduated from Kuibyshev Technical Institute with a major in electrical engineering. His career: 1974-1976, served in Soviet Union Army; 1976-1979, Electromechanist, then engineer on electronics on "ZIM" plant in Kuibyshev; 1979-1985, senior engineer, head of computing center, deputy of chief engineer on Plug plant in Jalal-Abad; 1985-1990, director of "Profil" plant in Kok Yangak;

Bakiyev moved into politics in 1990-1991, as first secretary of committee of party, chairman of city council in Kok Yangak. Then his political career took the following path: 1991-1992, deputy chairman of the Jalal Abad regional council; 1992-1994, chief of the Toruz Toro Rayon administration; 1994-1995, deputy chairman of the State Property Fund; 1995-1997, First Deputy Governor of the Jalal Abad province; 1997-2000, Governor of the Chuy province.
