It may be 2006 in the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area. , but in China, it's 4703, the Year of the Dog.

A group of Chinese students recently stayed with local families to see how people in the United States celebrate the Chinese New Year Chinese New Year (Simplified Chinese: ; Traditional Chinese: ; Pinyin: ChūnjiĆ©), or Spring Festival  and experience the differences and similarities between the two cultures.

Toward the end of their stay, the Chinese students entertained their host families during a dinner at the Jewish Community Center in Sherman Oaks. They performed traditional Chinese songs and dances and one visiting student, Zhiyi Ren, played a Chinese stringed instrument stringed instrument, any musical instrument whose tone is produced by vibrating strings. Those whose strings are plucked with the finger or a plectrum include the balalaika, banjo, guitar, harp, lute, mandolin, zither, the sitar of India and Pakistan, the koto of  called a pipa pipa
 or p'i-p'a

Short-necked Chinese lute. It has a pear-shaped body and a fretted fingerboard, and the silk strings are plucked with the fingernails. It is prominent in the opera orchestra and as an ensemble, solo, and accompanying instrument.
