KSS overcomes challenges to complete biomedical facility.

KSS Architect has announced the completion of the Rutgers University Department of Biomedical Engineering located on the Busch campus. The project was completed in early 2007 and dedicated on April 18.

"Rutgers' new biomedical engineering building was a very exciting project for KSS," said Allan Kehrt, FAIA, partner at KSS Architects. "Between keeping the design of the building unique, incorporating all the new technological features and keeping the building environmentally friendly, we were constantly encountering new challenges."

The building features 53,000 s/f of conference and classrooms, research and teaching laboratories, support and computer facilities, and faculty offices. The space also holds a 200-seat auditorium with state-of-the art audiovisual conference rooms and distance-learning capabilities, as well as a 100-seat classroom. The classroom is equipped with an Immersa-Desk and a specialized laboratory. Located on the new pedestrian circulation spine, the building links all of the engineering buildings on the Busch Campus and forms a new primary entrance on the campus.

The building is designed to be environmentally friendly and was built in compliance with the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) guidelines. All the components, materials and systems were chosen and designed with sensitivity to the environment and to minimize overall energy consumption.
