KROGER WINS KING CENTER SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY AWARD

CINCINNATI, Jan. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- The Kroger Co. (NYSE: KR) has been awarded the 1993 Martin Luther King, Jr. Management Social Responsibility Award.
The award is given annually by the Atlanta-based Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Non-Violent Social Change. It honors individuals and organizations that have made notable contributions in addressing human needs and the quality of life through social responsibility and community involvement. Kroger was honored by the King Center "for being in the vanguard of the struggle for social and economic justice in America."
Kroger President and Chief Operating Officer Richard L. Bere accepted the award in Atlanta earlier this month and noted that community involvement is viewed by Kroger "as an integral part of its total business strategy."
Kroger was cited for its minority hiring practices, especially in store management, and for its partnership in education programs with elementary schools and colleges in Atlanta, Cincinnati, Louisville, Indianapolis and other cities. The award made special note of the company's innovative Citi-Center store in Atlanta, where Kroger offers low-rent business space to small, inner-city shop owners within the 87,000-square-foot combination store.
