KROGER SEES BREAK EVEN THIRD QUARTER

KROGER SEES BREAK EVEN THIRD QUARTER
CINCINNATI, Aug. 18 /PRNewswire/ --- The Kroger Co. (NYSE: KR) said

today that competitive pressures in certain key markets plus the lingering effects of a 10-week strike in Michigan are likely to result in third quarter earnings per share close to the break-even mark before extraordinary charges from the early retirement of debt.
Kroger said that overall performance in many of its major markets is trending favorably so far in the quarter. However, earnings in Texas and portions of the Midwest have declined because the company has initiated strong pricing programs to maintain its customer base. Both areas are under heavy pressure from the entry of new competitors with aggressive store building and expansion programs. The company added that its significant investment to rebuild Michigan's business after the strike is also reducing operating earnings.
Kroger said identical food store sales in the third quarter to date, including Michigan, are flat with a year ago.
