Accredited public or private schools are eligible to participate in the SOS program. To obtain a free copy of a Dinosaur Adventure for the PC, Dinosaur Adventure for the Macintosh or Space Adventure for the PC, a request must be sent in writing on the school's letterhead along with a completed SOS form to Knowledge Adventure. Each school is eligible to receive one copy of Knowledge Adventure educational software for use on a single computer at the school. In accordance with the software copyright laws, the software may not be copied for use on other computers.
Bill Gross, chairman of Knowledge Adventure, stated, "Less than two years ago, I started this company in order to give something back to school-age children using my expertise in developing software. Since that time, we have been very fortunate to receive industry recognition for our products including the Software Publishers Association awards for Best Elementary Education Product for Dinosaur Adventure and Best Secondary Education Product for Space Adventure. As a result of our efforts, it is now possible for us to make a contribution back to the schools with this new program."
"Today, schools are faced with a variety of challenges, particularly with regard to budgets," commented Rod Turner, president and chief executive officer, Knowledge Adventure. "Therefore, we felt that it was important for us to demonstrate our support for schools with the announcement of the SOS program. In addition, we are now able to offer products for both the PC as well as the Macintosh, with the introduction of Dinosaur Adventure for the Macintosh."
Authored by Caltech's Tom McDonough and developed in collaboration with Astronaut Buzz Aldrin, Space Adventure was the first disk-based PC product featuring full-motion color video and stereophonic sound along with simulations. Space Adventure also features exquisite photographic- quality images and an original score in full stereophonic MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) sound, for use on the average home or school PC. The product provides a comprehensive look at rockets, human exploration of space, robotic space exploration, the science of space discovery and the solar system. It even includes a section on science fiction and the search for extraterrestrial intelligence.
Dinosaur Adventure and Dinosaur Adventure for the Macintosh are educational software products that explore the world of dinosaurs covering the rise of dinosaurs from early reptiles, dinosaurs' lifestyles, the science of fossil formation and discovery, and major dinosaur excavations around the world. Detailed descriptions of more than 40 of the most popular and interesting dinosaurs and prehistoric creatures with their sizes, weights and sites of discovery are included. Realistic dinosaur movies with full stereo sound are included, created by filming Dinamation International's robotic dinosaurs in
real-life settings. In addition, the products feature an interactive read-aloud talking storybook with digitized speech that allows children to turn pages forward and back, as well as click on individual words and objects to hear them pronounced. Also included are two dinosaur games, "Read-A- Saurus" and "Name-A-Saurus," to reinforce visual identification as well as the spelling of the names of different dinosaurs.
