KNIGHTS FOLLOW PLAN TO DEFEAT MARSHALL.

Byline: Bill Schlotter Daily News Staff Writer

Divide and conquer.

for the Alpha League title with a 71-60 victory over visiting Marshall.

"We didn't want to lose our chance at a league championship in our home gym," said Knights leading scorer Jermaine Sweet (23 points), who said the Knights' plan was to spread the court on the taller Eagles and run as much as possible.

"We basically wanted to outrun out·run

 them," Sweet said.

With two league games remaining, the Knights (17-5, 7-1) have a one-game lead over previously co-leading Marshall (16-3, 7-2) and Village Christian (7-2 in league).

"We're two games away from a title," Sweet said.

The Knights' win was a two-point game as late as 1:25 of the fourth quarter when Pat Berell's 3-point shot brought Marshall close at 61-59.

But with time running short, the Eagles were ultimately forced to foul. And the Knights made 10 of 10 down the stretch.

Guard Russ Brumpton, the Knights' designated free-throw shooter, made the final six shots.

"The plan was to get the ball to me so I could shoot free throws," Brumpton said. "We're a good free-throw shooting team."

Eagles coach Phil Sherman gave the Knights their due for knocking his Eagles a step behind in the title race.

"They had a good game plan and they made it work," Sherman said.

Sherman had a good plan, too: get the ball inside to big men Trayon Jackson Jackson.

But although Jackson and Allen got the ball frequently, they had trouble putting it in the basket.

"We missed a lot of easy shots," Sherman said.

Sweet was the main man for the Knights. And a pair of Sweet 3-pointers were crucial.

One made the score 44-40 Knights after Marshall had cut the lead to one point late in the third quarter.

Another, leading off the fourth period, made it 49-43 after Marshall had closed to just three back.

L.A. Baptist's Ryan Davis was the second leading scorer with 13 points.
