KNIGHT-RIDDER TO ACQUIRE 6 PERCENT INTEREST IN US ORDER

 MIAMI, Oct. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Knight-Ridder, Inc. (NYSE: KRI) and US Order announced today that Knight-Ridder has agreed to acquire a 6 percent interest in the company. Knight-Ridder will be an important investor in US Order, which is raising new equity capital to expand its existing network of interactive electronic services to consumers utilizing screen-based telephones and other front-end devices. Funding of the Knight-Ridder investment is subject to a minimum additional investment of $6 million by other investors. US Order expects to close on $12 million in new equity with Knight-Ridder and other investors in the next few weeks.
 William F. Gorog, chairman and CEO of US Order, stated: "The investment by Knight-Ridder provides capital and marketing expertise, which will help us develop the consumer market. Knight-Ridder's expertise in media and publishing will be an invaluable asset to us and we welcome Knight-Ridder to the US Order shareholder family."

Consumers can use the ScanFone 24 hours a day from the convenience of their homes to access interactive services. ScanFone is a service of US Order of Herndon, Va., and has thousands of users in 50 states. The company currently has marketing and strategic relationships with BancOne, Bell Atlantic, Bell South, Sprint/United Telephone and VeriFone. The company has active discussions under way with other companies.
