KMART TO OPEN THIRD STORE ON OAHU

TROY, Mich., Dec. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Kmart Corporation (NYSE: KM) today announced a third Kmart store location on Oahu, near Aloha Stadium. The store, to be developed by Kmart Corporation and DMAC, Inc., is part of the retailer's $3 billion renewal and expansion program.
Oahu's new Kmart will boast fresh surroundings, wider aisles, modern displays and quality merchandise for the home and the entire family. The 120,000-square-foot store will feature family apparel, home fashions, a complete home-improvement department, pharmacy and Little Caesars Pizza Station as well as ample parking and easy access to the store.
"Kmart welcomes the opportunity to serve the customers of Oahu with a wide array of merchandise at the best price and service available," said Tom Watkins, senior vice president of Kmart.
The addition of this store will be the third site on Oahu for the company and the fourth location in the state of Hawaii. This includes the Iwilei site which opened in October, the Waipahu location scheduled to open in the summer of 1993 and the opening of the Maui store in the summer of 1993.
The 120,000-square-foot Kmart will occupy the site of the former Castle Park Amusement Center at the intersection of Kahuapaani and Salt Lake Boulevard. There will also be an additional 100,000 square feet of other stores.
Once the construction is under way, it takes between six to eight months to build the store and 10 weeks to complete its indoor merchandise displays.
Kmart's renewal plan calls for the expansion of 700 stores and opening of up to 100 new stores every year until 1995. By then, every Kmart store will be modernized or expanded, totaling 2,500 stores. In total, the renewal effort will add 35 million square feet of selling space to the Kmart division through: 309 new, full-size stores; 620 enlargements; 325 relocations; and 1,200 refurbishments.
With the opening of the new Oahu store, there will be four Kmart stores in Hawaii employing over 1,400 area residents.
Kmart Corporation is also the parent company for Pay Less Drug Stores, Builders Square, Waldenbooks, Borders, Inc., PACE Membership Warehouse Clubs, OfficeMax and The Sports Authority. Combined with its 2,426 Kmart stores, the retail giant serves the United States, Puerto Rico and Canada with more than 4,000 retail outlets in all.
