KMART TO HOLD FOOD DRIVE TO COLLECT 1 MILLION CANS OF FOOD AS PART OF AMERICAN EXPRESS' CHARGE AGAINST HUNGER CAMPAIGN

NEW YORK, Nov. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Kmart stores nationwide will attempt to collect 1 million cans of food for the less fortunate during the Thanksgiving holiday by holding an employee canned food drive on Nov. 7. The food will be contributed during a special Kmart employee shopping night held that evening, and proceeds will be donated to food banks and other hunger-relief efforts in each Kmart store's community.
The drive is part of Kmart's commitment to "Charge Against Hunger," American Express and Share Our Strength's multi-million dollar fundraising, awareness and employee volunteer campaign to fight hunger in America. Every time the American Express(R) Card is used from now through Dec. 31, 1993, to make a purchase, American Express will donate 2 cents to Share Our Strength, one of the nation's largest hunger relief organizations, with a goal of raising up to $5 million.
American Express' donation, one of the largest-ever corporate contributions to fighting hunger in the United States, will be distributed by Share Our Strength in the form of grants to local initiatives targeted to provide food assistance, nutrition education, and long-term preventative measures to the fastest growing segment of hungry Americans -- young children and their families.
Kmart will also supplement the Charge Against Hunger money with matching funds of their own. Beginning Nov. 26 and continuing through Dec. 31, 1993, Kmart will match American Express's contribution of 2 cents for every purchase made with the American Express Card in Kmart stores, up to a total of $250,000.
"We applaud Kmart and their efforts toward fighting hunger in America by joining Charge Against Hunger," said Tom Ryder, president of Establishment Services for American Express Travel Related Services, Inc. "If every company in America made a similar commitment, we could go a long way toward ending hunger in this country," he added.
