KMART CORPORATION REPORTS MAY SALES INCREASE

 TROY, Mich., June 3, 1993 /PRNewswire/ -- Kmart Corporation
(NYSE: KM) today reported a sales increase of 10.8% for May 1993
over sales during the same period of last year. Consolidated sales
for the four-week period ended May 26, 1993 amounted to
$3,239,456,000, versus sales of $2,924,642,000 for the four weeks
 ended May 27, 1992.
Sales for the 17 weeks ended May 26, 1993 were $12,266,595,000, up
9.6% from the $11,191,228,000 for the first 17 weeks of 1992.
"Sales in May improved considerably from first-quarter results,
reflecting the benefits of more seasonable spring weather in many
parts of the country," said Joseph E. Antonini, Kmart chairman of
the board and chief executive officer. "We are especially pleased
with customer response to our seasonal hardline merchandise
categories, such as garden shop business."
"As good as May sales were, we would have shown an even stronger
gain were it not for the later date for Memorial Day in 1993
(May 31) than in 1992 (May 25), which penalized sales comparisons in
the last week of the month," said Antonini. "As expected, there was
a very strong pickup in sales in the first week of our June
reporting period that began on May 27."
