KMART CORPORATION REPORTS MARCH SALES INCREASE
TROY, Mich., April 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Kmart Corporation (NYSE: KM)

today reported a sales increase of 4.7 percent for March 1992 over sales during the same period of last year. Consolidated sales for the five- week period ended April 1, 1992, amounted to $3,149,969,000, vs. sales of $3,009,689,000 for the five weeks ended April 3, 1991.
Sales for the nine weeks ended April 1, 1992, were $5,470,319,000, up 6.8 percent from the $5,121,578,000 for the first nine weeks of 1991.
Kmart Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer Joseph E. Antonini said, "Sales in the first two weeks of March were quite strong, but the later date for Easter in 1992 (April 19) than in 1991 (March 31) adversely affected sales comparisons in the second half of the month, as expected. This shift in Easter, plus unseasonably cold weather, impacted sales of both hardline and apparel spring seasonal merchandise. However, we are encouraged that sales in a number of big-ticket categories, most notably home electronics, continued to improve. And our specialty store businesses continue to achieve strong comparable store sales gains."
Kmart Corporation serves America with more than 4,000 retail outlets in all 50 states in the United States and in Puerto Rico and Canada. Kmart, currently operating 2,378 Kmart stores, is also the parent company for PACE Membership Warehouse, Builders Square, Pay Less Drug Stores, Waldenbooks, The Sports Authority and OfficeMax.
Kmart Corporation's stock is listed on the New York, Pacific and Midwest stock exchanges. Its trading symbol is KM.
