KMART CORPORATION REPORTS JULY SALES INCREASE

 TROY, Mich., August 5, 1993 /PRNewswire/ -- Kmart Corporation
(NYSE: KM) today reported a sales increase of 12.6% for July 1993
over sales during the same period of last year. Consolidated sales
for the four-week period ended July 28, 1993 amounted to
$3,029,787,000, versus sales of $2,691,460,000 for the four weeks
 ended July 29, 1992.
Sales for the 26 weeks ended July 28, 1993 were $19,226,056,000, up
10.4% from the $17,407,060,000 for the first 26 weeks of 1992.
"Sales in July in the U.S. Kmart division increased 9.5%, with the
gain on a comparable store basis 6.5%, an excellent showing
considering the 9.5% total and 7.5% comparable store increases in
July 1992," said Joseph E. Antonini, chairman of the board and chief
executive officer. "We are particularly encouraged by the
continuing strength in our hardline merchandise categories, both in
basic consumable items and in seasonal merchandise lines. While the
apparel sales increase was more modest, clearance markdowns have not
been excessive because inventories in seasonal merchandise are
 essentially on plan."
"Of the specialty retail businesses, sales in July continued to be
very strong at OfficeMax and Borders," said Antonini. "In addition,
sales at Builders Square and The Sports Authority ran considerably
 ahead of earlier-in-the-year trends."
Kmart Corporation serves America with over 4,000 retail outlets in
all 50 states in the United States and in Puerto Rico, Canada, the
Czech Republic and Slovakia. Kmart, currently operating 2,423 Kmart
stores, is also the parent company for PACE Membership Warehouse,
Builders Square, PayLess Drug Stores, Waldenbooks, The Sports
 Authority, OfficeMax and Borders.
Kmart Corporation's stock is listed on the New York, Pacific and
Midwest Stock Exchanges. Its trading symbol is KM.
