KMART CORPORATION REPORTS AUGUST SALES INCREASE

 TROY, Mich., September 2, 1993 /PRNewswire/ -- Kmart Corporation
(NYSE: KM) today reported a sales increase of 10.7% for August 1993
over sales during the same period of last year. Consolidated sales
for the four-week period ended August 25, 1993 amounted to a record
$3,054,154,000, versus sales of $2,760,068,000 for the four weeks
 ended August 26, 1992.
Sales for the 30 weeks ended August 25, 1993 were $22,280,210,000,
up 10.5% from the $20,167,128,000 for the first 30 weeks of 1992.
"The strengthening of sales that began in June continued through the
month of August, with sales in the U.S. Kmart division up 8.7% in
total and 5.6% on a comparable store basis," said Joseph E.
Antonini, chairman of the board and chief executive officer.
"Excellent sales gains were achieved in most hardline merchandise
categories, a broadening of the strength seen in June and July when
the improvement was more concentrated in basic consumable items and
seasonal merchandise lines. In addition, while the apparel sales
increase was more modest, there was a decided pick-up in this
business in the last two weeks of August."
"Of the specialty retail businesses, sales in August continued to be
very strong at OfficeMax and Borders," said Antonini. "In addition,
sales at Builders Square, The Sports Authority and Waldenbooks ran
ahead of earlier-in-the-year trends. PayLess sales continue to run
essentially on plan, and PACE sales results continue to reflect a
 very difficult warehouse club environment."
Kmart Corporation serves America with over 4,000 retail outlets in
