KMART CORPORATION REPORTS AUGUST SALES INCREASE
TROY, Mich., Sept. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Kmart Corporation (NYSE: KM)

today reported a sales increase of 9.6 percent for August 1992 over sales during the same period of last year. Consolidated sales for the four-week period ended Aug. 26, 1992, amounted to $2,759,748,000, versus sales of $2,518,792,000 for the four weeks ended Aug. 28, 1991.
Sales for the 30 weeks ended Aug. 26, 1992, were $20,166,937,000, up 8.6 percent from the $18,565,795,000 for the first 30 weeks of 1991.
Kmart Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer Joseph E. Antonini said, "Sales in August in the discount stores were adversely affected by the later date for Labor Day this year which will be observed on Sept. 7, 1992, compared with Sept. 2, 1991. The impact of this calendar shift was most evident in apparel and other back-to-school merchandise in those sections of the country where school openings have been delayed. However, in much of the South, where school openings are generally earlier, we experienced much stronger sales comparisons in August. The later observance of Labor Day also impacted the specialty store businesses."
Kmart Corporation serves America with over 4,000 retail outlets in all 50 states in the United States and in Puerto Rico, Canada and Czechoslovakia. Kmart, currently operating 2,386 Kmart stores, is also the parent company for PACE Membership Warehouse, Builders Square, PayLess Drug Stores, Waldenbooks, The Sports Authority and OfficeMax.
Kmart Corporation's stock is listed on the New York, Pacific and Midwest stock exchanges. Its trading symbol is KM.
