KMART CORPORATION LOGS ON REVERE WARE AS 2,000th EDI VENDOR

KMART CORPORATION LOGS ON REVERE WARE AS 2,000th EDI VENDOR
TROY, Mich., March 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Kmart Corporation (NYSE: KM) today announced the 2,000th vendor to participate in Kmart's electronic data interchange (EDI) program. The partner is REVERE WARE(R), the nationally known metal cookware company.
"Reaching the total of 2,000 vendors represents a real milestone for both Kmart and the retail industry. But more importantly, the Kmart customer benefits through lower prices and better in-stock positions on the merchandise they want," said David M. Carlson, Kmart's senior vice president, Corporate Information Systems. "Customer service will continue to improve and savings will continue to grow as more vendors become EDI partners."
EDI allows Kmart and its vendor partners to exchange data required for business functions in a structured, automated method. EDI speeds up and improves the accuracy of that data. These exchanges include sending purchase orders, invoices, shipping notices as well as other transactions.
Together with its 2,000 vendor partners, Kmart is achieving reductions in lead time, increases in turnover of products and increases in sales for each product line. All participating vendors benefit in time savings and a reduction in mailing, handling and paper costs. Companies all along the manufacturing line are also able to reduce inventory and operating expenses.
Although Kmart has been using EDI for nearly 15 years, the recent acceleration in usage was made possible by the development of industry standards. In 1987, Kmart helped spearhead efforts to develop these standards and by 1988 Kmart was aggressively implementing the new VICS-EDI standard.
Kmart started carrying REVERE WARE products just one year ago in 1,400 Kmart stores. Today REVERE WARE cookware is carried in all 2,251 U.S. Kmart locations. In addition to going on-line with Kmart's EDI system, REVERE WARE is simultaneously implementing the Partners in Merchandise Flow Program, which is Kmart's vendor replenishment program. In this program, reorders are automatically generated by the vendor as a result of retail sales.
REVERE WARE cookware, on the market since 1939, was acquired by Corning in 1988. Corning's established brands (i.e., CORNING WARE(R), PYREX(R), VISIONS(R) and CORELLE(R)) have been part of Kmart's EDI program for over a year.
Kmart Corporation serves America with more than 4,000 retail outlets in all 50 states and in Puerto Rico and Canada. Kmart, currently operating 2,377 Kmart stores, is also the parent company for Payless Drug Stores, Builders Square, Waldenbooks, PACE Membership Warehouse, The Sports Authority and OfficeMax.
