                    FOOD BASKETS FOR NEEDY FAMILIES
TROY, Mich., Nov. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- More than 2,200 Kmart Good News Committees(R), groups of associate volunteers across the country, will shop for groceries and assemble food baskets for some 44,000 needy families nationwide.
The main ingredients for a traditional Thanksgiving meal -- turkey, potatoes, stuffing, vegetables, bread and pumpkin pie -- will be distributed on Monday, Nov. 25, to needy families across America. "Because of the growing number of homeless, jobless and those in need across the country, this year's Thanksgiving food basket program has more meaning for Kmart stores and their communities," said Joseph E. Antonini, Kmart's chairman of the board, president and chief executive officer.
"Thanksgiving is traditionally a time to gather together families and friends to give thanks. Kmart wants the more than 44,000 families who otherwise may not have this opportunity to enjoy a Thanksgiving meal," continued Antonini.
Locally, each Good News Committee distributes 20 food baskets to families in need within the community, working with local civic organizations to identify recipients.
More than 298,000 turkeys and all the trimmings have been donated by Kmart since it began the tradition of distributing Thanksgiving food baskets in 1985.
Kmart Good News Committees are organized by associate volunteers in each store. They are actively involved in year-round outreach programs in the communities surrounding their Kmart stores.
Kmart Corporation (NYSE: KM) serves America with over 4,000 retail outlets in all 50 states and in Puerto Rico and Canada. Kmart, currently operating 2,356 Kmart stores, is also the parent company for Pay Less Drug Stores, Builders Square, Waldenbooks, PACE Membership Warehouse and the Sports Authority.
