KLM ARRIVES IN PORTLAND, JOINS NORTHWEST TO OFFER TRAVELERS GLOBAL ROUTE NETWORK

PORTLAND, Ore., March 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Portland travelers will enjoy unparalleled airline access to cities around the world when KLM Royal Dutch Airlines and Northwest Airlines today begin a new service agreement from Portland.
Travelers are able to buy a single ticket from Portland to anywhere in the world the KLM and Northwest route system encompasses, including more than 380 cities in North America, Europe, Asia, South America, Africa, Australia, and the Middle East.
"No other airline system in the world can provide passengers with the travel options available through KLM and Northwest," said Pnoel Shamun, KLM regional sales manager. "Portland travelers are now linked to this worldwide network."
Passengers can purchase a KLM or Northwest ticket from Portland to any city served by either airline under the arrangement, called a code- sharing agreement. Passengers receive boarding passes for all flights, through check-in of baggage and other advantages.
The code-share arrangement utilizes the fleets and routes of both airlines. For example, passengers buying a KLM ticket from Portland to Rome would travel from Portland to Minneapolis/St. Paul via Northwest's existing service, connect to KLM's and Northwest's joint non-stop services to Amsterdam and then connect to KLM's non-stop service to Rome.
"Traveling on the KLM-Northwest system is much smoother than hassling with combinations of other airlines because our system is integrated specifically with the needs of international travelers in mind," said Mark Abels, Northwest vice president-corporate communications.
Northwest's partnership with KLM gives passengers pricing advantages other airlines cannot provide. Northwest and KLM offer a round-trip fare from Portland to Marseilles, France, for as little as $868 round- trip, while no other airline offers a fare of less than $918. Northwest and KLM offer Portland to Lisbon, Portugal, round-trip travel for as little as $868 compared to $1,222 for any other airline.
Additionally, Northwest and KLM have coordinated their schedules to provide Portland passengers with quick connections to destinations beyond KLM's Amsterdam hub.
Portland passengers also will benefit from Northwest's WorldPerks free travel program, of which KLM is a full participant. Travelers receive a free domestic round-trip ticket after just 20,000 miles, and miles can be earned by flying Northwest or KLM. Free travel awards can be used to any destination the two airlines serve worldwide. Passengers also earn miles by staying at hotels, renting cars and using the WorldPerks Visa card or MCI telephone calling card.
KLM and Northwest are allowed to code-share from U.S. cities because of an Open Skies agreement reached between the United States and Netherlands governments last year. No other airline combination has approval to offer service in this way. Portland is one of the first cities to which KLM has extended the code-share arrangement.
KLM and Northwest are integrating operations under a commercial cooperation agreement reached late last year. KLM purchased 20 percent of Northwest in 1989.
Northwest is the world's fourth-largest airline with its Northwest Airlink regional airline partners serves more than 240 cities in the United States, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, Europe, Asia and Australia.
KLM is the world's eighth largest airline in terms of international kilometer miles and serves 157 cities in Europe, Asia, North America, South America, Africa and Australia. Together, KLM and Northwest comprise the world's third-largest airline system.
