KLAC SHEDS TALK FORMAT, WILL SWITCH TO STANDARDS.

Byline: Fred Shuster Staff Writer

KLAC-AM (570) will soon shut up and just play the music.

The new KLAC debuts Dec. 12, which happens to be Frank Sinatra's birthday. The public is invited to a kickoff that day at the Museum of TV & Radio in Beverly Hills Beverly Hills, city (1990 pop. 31,971), Los Angeles co., S Calif., completely surrounded by the city of Los Angeles; inc. 1914. The largely residential city is home to many motion-picture and television personalities.  where a Sinatra-in-Vegas documentary will be screened.

KLAC program director Brad Chambers said the on-air talent lineup was still in development, but talks were ongoing with potential hosts from the music world rather than the radio industry. It's thought popular singer Steve Tyrell may play a part in the new KLAC schedule just as saxophonist Dave Koz Dave Koz (March 27, 1963) is an American jazz saxophonist. He often draws comparisons to another well-known saxophonist, David Sanborn. Because the two sound almost alike, Koz is sometimes billed as "the second coming of Sanborn".  co-hosts mornings on smooth-jazz KTWV-FM (94.7) - the Wave.

KLAC, which will continue broadcasting Lakers games, will compete with KSUR-AM (1260), which has featured a contemporary standards playlist A file that contains an index to a selected group of music files on the computer. Using digital jukebox software such as iTunes and Winamp, playlists are created by the user by dragging and dropping titles from a master index. The software may be able to create a playlist automatically.  since last March after a series of format changes.

``We're aiming for a fresh sound in terms of personalities and music,'' Chambers said. ``Some of these timeless songs don't require a dated delivery. Quite frankly, the standards audience isn't what it used to be - 55 and older. We believe we can draw a broader group of listeners.''

An encouraging sign for standards stations is the warm reception given to Rod Stewart's new collection of American standards, which recently entered the pop charts at No. 4. Contemporary jazz singer Diana Krall's new live disc is also a crossover success.

``Classic songs have the ability to be perpetually fresh, especially when reinvented by contemporary artists,'' said Robin Bertolucci, director of Clear Channel's local AM outlets KLAC, talk KFI-AM (640) and sports KXTA-AM (1150).

She said that while Jackson will not be heard on KLAC after the change, the longtime broadcaster did play an important part in the station's talk format.
