KIWANIS PARTNERS WITH MARIPOSA SCHOOL READING, CITIZENSHIP HONORS GIVEN.

Byline: Daily News

LANCASTER -- The Lancaster chapter of Kiwanis International Kiwanis International (kĭwä`nĭs), community service organization of active and retired business and professional people, founded in 1915 at Detroit, Mich. Local Kiwanis clubs now exist in more than 90 countries.  has partnered with Mariposa Elementary School elementary school: see school.  to encourage reading and citizenship.

Over the past school year, Lancaster Kiwanis representatives have attended Mariposa's monthly school assembly to recognize students in each grade who have excelled in reading and citizenship.

To be recognized, each student receiving a framed Kiwanis Certificate of Award has gone through a grade-level teacher nomination and selection process. The recipients are evaluated over a three-month period to receive an award in either reading or citizenship.

``Mariposa teachers recognize the importance of reading, and its mastery for all subjects,'' says Sheldon Epstein, school principal. ``Mariposa is a `reading first' school and this award program that Lancaster Kiwanis participates in places a focus on reading and citizenship and excites and energizes our students.''

in the classroom and character development on the playground. Epstein sees this ``recognition promoting a sense of pride and understanding in the children for their classroom and the school and eventually their community.

``We see those students receiving the certificate showing a marked improvement in reading and citizenship, especially when they are recognized by Lancaster Kiwanis in front of their peers and parents,'' Epstein said. ``And parents are proud to have their children recognized at school for their personal accomplishment.''

The Lancaster Kiwanis awards are helpful, said first-grade teacher Laurie McKinlay.

``Parents really take notice when they see community members taking an interest in the success of their children,'' she said.

Teacher Tracy Wilcox added: ``Parents of special-needs children are thrilled thrill

to have their child recognized because the child is really working to improve.''

``Our partnership with Mariposa fits with the key message and motto of Kiwanis: Serving the Children of the World, one child at a time,'' said Richard Skidmore, president of Lancaster Kiwanis. ``Lancaster Kiwanis is a thriving organization of service-minded men and women who respond to the unique needs of their community and address issues. Our partnership with Mariposa School is one of the ways our club members work to improve our community.

``Lancaster Kiwanis encourages community service and leadership skills at all levels so as to pass on the ideals of service to our future generations. What better place to start but in the classroom and on the school yard?''

The Kiwanis awards fit into Mariposa School's plans, and as an organization, Kiwanis works well with the school, the principal said.

``I would like to see this type of recognition program expanded to other schools in the Lancaster School District Lancaster School District may refer to:
