Lying prone on the ice was Jeremy Roenick Jeremy Shaffer Roenick (born January 17, 1970 in Boston, Massachusetts) is a professional ice hockey player currently playing for the San Jose Sharks. He has played for the Chicago Blackhawks, Phoenix Coyotes, Philadelphia Flyers, and Los Angeles Kings over the course of 18 NHL , the victim of a clean but brutal check by Phoenix's Denis Gauthier Denis Gauthier, Jr (born October 1, 1976 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada) is a professional ice hockey defenceman with the Philadelphia Phantoms of the American Hockey League. Playing career . The Kings later announced that Roenick, one of the main reasons the team has high hopes for this season, had sustained a concussion and will be reevaluated today.

Roenick has a history of injuries. In 2004 he suffered a broken jaw and the 10th documented concussion of his career when he was struck in the face by a slap shot slap shot

. He missed 19 games. Sunday's injury overshadowed the game, in which the Kings won 7-4 over the Coyotes.

The injury occurred 2:25 into the second period, when Roenick carried the puck through the right side of the neutral zone. Gauthier skated in and delivered a crushing blow with his shoulder to the chest of Roenick, who went down hard, sprawling headfirst head·first   also head·fore·most

Officials immediately stopped play and assisted trainer Pete Demers onto the ice. After about a minute, Roenick got up and gingerly skated to the Kings' bench.

Despite the clean hit, on the next shift Tom Kostopoulos Tom Kostopoulos (born January 24 1979 in Mississauga, Ontario) is a Canadian ice hockey player. Kostopoulos is of Greek Macedonian descent.

Kostopoulos was drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the seventh Round of the 1999 NHL draft.
fought Gauthier and a scrap developed that resulted in a 10-minute misconduct penalty for Kostopoulos and a game misconduct Noun 1. game misconduct - (ice hockey) a penalty that suspends a player for the remainder of a game (but allows the team to send in a substitute for the suspended player)  for Ken Belanger.

Roenick's loss would be a huge blow to the Kings, who acquired him from Philadelphia via trade last month and are paying him a team-high $4.94 million this season to center their top scoring line.

This is nothing new to the Kings, who already were without center Derek Armstrong (concussion) and had Jason Allison and Adam Deadmarsh miss the 2003-04 season because of concussion-related issues.

--Not happy: Coach Andy Murray rearranged his lineup for Sunday's game to include several players who were scheduled to have the game off but had played poorly the night before in Las Vegas.

``It was just one of those games where, to be honest, our top-end guys weren't our top-end guys,'' Murray said. ``It was just one game, but it's our job as coaches to bring that to their attention.''

In the second period, the Coyotes scored four goals - three on the power play - to take a 4-2 lead, but Dustin Brown, Kostopoulos and Alexander Frolov scored in the third period to give the Kings the lead.
