KINGS NOTEBOOK: DEADMARSH: IT WILL BE A TOUGH ADJUSTMENT.

Byline: Matt McHale Staff Writer

He came off the ice after scoring two goals in an 8-2 victory over Boston only to learn he was going from the team with the NHL's best record to a club fighting for its playoff life.

By Thursday, Deadmarsh, a 33-goal scorer in the 1996-97 season, was saying all the right things about how excited he was to be making a postseason push.

But Deadmarsh, 25, has more on his mind than hockey. Although he played just 39 of the Avs' first 61 games because of a concussion concussion

and eye and knee injuries, Deadmarsh said the hardest part about heading to L.A. is leaving his family behind.

His wife, Krista, gave birth Feb. 9 to twin daughters six weeks premature. They were still in intensive care at a Denver-area hospital at the time of the trade.

``It is a very difficult situation,'' said Deadmarsh, who participated Friday in his first practice with the Kings. ``Everybody has been great in giving me the time I need to make the adjustment, but it still is tough leaving everyone behind. I know everything will work out and we can help get the Kings into the playoffs.''

Deadmarsh has been limited to 13 goals this season because of the injuries. But the ingredients Kings general manager Dave Taylor likes about Deadmarsh - grit, character and leadership - should help a team sorely lacking in those qualities this season.

Back to the scene of the crime. The Kings were hoping their last home stand would solidly put them in the playoff picture. Instead, they went 2-5-1 and dropped to 10th in the West. Although they were embarrassed twice by Edmonton in the past 10 days, the Kings are just four points behind the Oilers for the eighth and final playoff spot after Thursday's 2-0 shutout of Calgary. The Blue Jackets might seem a good opponent to help build some momentum. They are tied with the Mighty Ducks
