KINGS FAMILY RESTAURANTS TO WORK WITH DISTRICT ATTORNEY ON ALLEGATIONS THAT EMPLOYEE PHONE CONVERSATIONS WERE TAPED

MCKEESPORT, Pa., Jan. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Kings Family Restaurants will cooperate fully with the Westmoreland County District Attorney's office in an investigation into allegations that the conversations of four employees at its New Kensington store were audio-taped by the store's manager last year, according to company President Hartley C. King.
"I've not been officially informed of the District Attorney's investigation, so I can not address it beyond the fact that we will cooperate to the fullest," said King. However, he said that news of the alleged incident first came to his attention in August of last year, although the tapings supposedly took place in December, 1992 through March of 1993.
"As you might imagine, we're very distressed about the situation, and are trying to put all the pieces together. We're sorry if this ordeal has upset or embarrassed any of our employees."
"Until last August, neither I nor the vice president of operations knew anything about the situation, nor would we have permitted such actions. We did take immediate steps, however, once we were made aware of the problem," said King.
The store's manager and the district manager had discussions with Kathy Provenzo, the assistant manager who initiated the complaint. It was thought to have been resolved to her satisfaction, according to King. After that, Kings' corporate management felt it best to transfer the store's manager and district manager from the New Kensington location.
Also, according to King, the director of human resources took steps to investigate the problem internally and to assure that there is not a re-occurrence of the situation. "In my 27 years in business, we've never had anything like this happen," said King. "It's an isolated incident."
King added "To the best of my knowledge, the complaint was brought to an agreeable solution last year. Only now have I been made aware of the District Attorney's investigation, so I can not comment, except to say that we will work with the District Attorney to achieve a satisfactory resolution to this situation."
