KINGS, DUCKS TIE ONE ON TEAMS PLAY A SPIRITED BATTLE AT THE POND.

Byline: Greg Christensen Staff Writer

ANAHEIM - It might not be do-or-die for the Mighty Ducks

Mighty Ducks is a half-hour Disney animated series aired on ABC and The Disney Afternoon in the fall of 1996. Twenty-six episodes total were produced.
, it just seemed that way as they battled the Kings at The Pond on Wednesday night.

There certainly was a playoff atmosphere - both on and off the ice. The sellout crowd of 17,174 - just the fifth of the year for the Ducks - were throughly through·ly

entertained as the local rivals fought late into the third period tied 2-2 in a wide-open game that featured more than its share of physical play.

However, through two periods the game was the continuation of a distrubing trend for the Ducks, who jumped out to an early lead, only to lose it.

The Ducks' revitalized power play accounted for the first two goals of the game as Steve Rucchin Steve Rucchin (born July 4, 1971 Thunder Bay, Ontario) is a centre who currently plays for the Atlanta Thrashers of the National Hockey League.

Rucchin played high school hockey for Sir Frederick Banting Secondary School in London, Ontario.

The goals were the team's 24th and 25th power play goals in the last 21 games and it marked the the ninth time in the span that the Ducks have scored two or more power play goals in a game.

But, then again, no lead is a safe lead with the Ducks these days and that was certainly the case once again.

The slumping Brian Smolinski of the Kings turned the game back around, pulling the Kings within 2-1 with his 19th goal of the season at 9:40 of the first period.

Smolinski then then tied the game when he ripped a slap shot slap shot

Always a proud American, he used the French pronunciation of his first and last names because it "sounded better." He played for the St. . The shot went just inside the left post 59 seconds into the second period.

The first Anaheim power play of the night was headed in reverse until Tverdovsky took a big hit to keep the puck in at the left point.

The Ducks defenseman slid it over to Fredrik Olausson Fredrik Olausson (born October 5, 1966, in Dädesjö, Sweden) is a retired Swedish ice hockey player. Playing career

was deflected past Storr by Rucchin at 4:02.

Rucchin's 16th goal of the season was the 100th of his career.

The Ducks' second power play goal came much easier. The Kings left Tverdovsky alone in the left circle and he had virtually all day to beat Storr for his 13th goal of the season at 8:53, just 19 seconds after Ian Laperriere Ian Laperrière (born January 19, 1974 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada) is an ice hockey player in the NHL. He played in the QMJHL 1990-1993 and was drafted by the St. Louis Blues of the NHL in the 7th round and pick number 158 in the 1992 draft.  had elbowed Jeff Nielsen Jeff Nielsen (Born September 20, 1971 in Grand Rapids, Minnesota) is a retired American ice hockey player who played in the NHL with the New York Rangers, Anaheim Mighty Ducks, and Minnesota Wild. But the Ducks' two-goal advantage was short lived. Glen Murray Glen Murray may refer to:

got the puck to Smolinski, who drove hard to the net and beat Hebert just inside the right post.

The goal was just the second in 14 games for Smolinski, whose only other goal in recent weeks was an empty-netter.

After giving up the two early goals, Storr answered every Anaheim challenge. In the first period the Kings goalie stopped Paul Kariya on a two-on-one break, just barely got a toe on the wraparound Wraparound

try by Matt Cullen and kicked out his left leg pad just in time to stop Kip Miller's bid from the slot.

In the second period, Kariya made a great move to split the Kings defense, but Storr got his glove on the Anaheim winger's shot.

Hebert was knocked out of the St. Louis game last Saturday and hadn't practiced since, but he looked especially sharp after Smolinski's second goal. In less than a minute midway through second period he stopped both Murray and Emerson twice.
