King of the Heap, who won the Malibu Stakes as a 12-1 shot on the opening day of the meeting, leads a field of 10 entered in today's $300,000-added San Fernando Breeders' Cup Stakes The San Fernando Breeders' Cup Stakes is an American race for thoroughbred horses run at Santa Anita Park each year. It's a Grade II event open to horses, age four and up, willing to race one and one-sixteenth miles on the dirt.  at Santa Anita.

King of the Heap will be ridden by Kent Desormeaux and will carry 120 pounds in the 45th running of the 1-1/8-mile race for 4-year-olds and up.

The 7-furlong Malibu Stakes was the opening leg of the three-race Strub Series. The San Fernando Stakes is the middle leg; the finale is the 1-1/4-mile Strub Stakes, to be run Feb. 2.

King of the Heap has won 4 of 9 lifetime starts and earned $222,950. King of the Heap has yet to run beyond 7 furlongs but has won 3 of 4 starts since Wally Dollase became his trainer.

``When he rates the way he did (in the Malibu), he should be able to go farther,'' Dollase said. ``We have to try the mile and an eighth.''

Victory Speech faded to finish sixth as the 11-10 favorite in the Malibu. Victory Speech has eight wins in 20 lifetime starts and earnings of $923,822.

Hesabull was second, Northern Afleet third, Ambivalent fourth and Dr. Caton last in the Malibu. King of the Heap ran last most of the way before beginning his winning rally.
