Byline: STEVE DILBECK

LA HABRA La Habra (lə hăb`rə), city (1990 pop. 51,266), Orange co., S Calif.; inc. 1925. A suburb of Los Angeles, La Habra was settled in the 1860s by Basque sheepherders.  - Every real man has two clear, unalienable UNALIENABLE. The state of a thing or right which cannot be sold.

 needs, the other one being:

To own the absolute biggest TV he can possibly pretend to afford.

And on no day is it more important to possess a big-screen TV than on Super Bowl Sunday. America's great secular holiday. A day the family gathers around the TV to see a life-sized Willie McGinest William Lee McGinest, Jr, (born December 11, 1971 in Long Beach, California), is an American football linebacker for the Cleveland Browns. When it comes to big screens, of course, there is but one man. Paul Goldenberg, that Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Noun 1.
:

``I am the King.''

The King has been at this since 1965. He opened his current Paul's in 1978; the next year Mitsubishi came out with its first big-screen TV and the following year came the VCR VCR: see videocassette recorder.

Goldenberg saw a movie theater in every home. Mitsubishi is the largest manufacturer of big screens and the King its top single-store seller for 19 consecutive years.

We were granted an audience with the King during his biggest week of the year.

What was the size of a big screen when you started in this biz?

``A big TV was around 17 inches.''

Really, how can this place be the big-screen kingdom when there's not even a freeway running through La Habra?

``We're freeway-close.''

Anybody who lives in Southern California is freeway close.

``Well, there you are.''

What customer lived the farthest away?

``Yesterday we sold a TV to a man from Turlock, which is 334 miles from here.''

Why would someone who lives past San Jose San Jose, city, United States

 buy a TV from Paul's?

``A very smart man.''

You're going to drive a TV to Turlock?

``We're deciding between driving it or shipping it. We've gone to Bakersfield a few times. We've driven to Las Vegas Las Vegas (läs vā`gəs), city (1990 pop. 258,295), seat of Clark co., S Nev.; inc. 1911. It is the largest city in Nevada and the center of one of the fastest-growing urban areas in the United States.  and Calexico. The average is 35-40 miles.''

I see pictures of you on the wall with President Reagan and President Clinton. Are you politically confused?

``I went to a USO USO: see United Service Organizations.

(UNIX Software Operation) AT&T's Unix division before it turned into USL. See Unix.
fund-raiser and President Reagan was there. However, I am one of the world's foremost Democrats.''

You've got a plasma job and another giant big screen in here going for $20,000 a pop. Can any TV really be worth 20 grand?

``You have to have a bit of money, a media room. But there are people building homes where the wood floors cost $20,000. How much fun do you get out of your wood floor?''

Talk to the wife. A man, though, has to have his special chair to watch his big screen. Who's King of the Recliner?

``Some years ago I went with a wonderful young lady and she started a scrapbook A Macintosh disk file that holds frequently used text and graphics objects, such as a company letterhead. Contrast with "clipboard," which is reserved memory that holds data only for the current session.  on the Queen of Soul Food, the King of Bedspreads, and there are kings of everything. But I have not heard of a chair king as of yet. That means there's opportunity.

I'm hoping for your nomination. What's bigger for you, the week before the New Year's Day New Year's Day, among ancient peoples the first day of the year frequently corresponded to the vernal or autumnal equinox, or to the summer or winter solstice. In the Middle Ages it was celebrated among Christians usually on Mar. 25.  games or the Super Bowl?

``If we have a West Coast team in the Super Bowl, that will probably be almost twice as big as New Year's week. This will probably be equal to it, because there's always interest in the Super Bowl. It's always fun to have a Super Bowl party.

``What is there better than sitting in front of your TV and watching the Super Bowl? Of course, we're talking about a big-screen TV from Paul's.''

What's your biggest sales day?

``Super Bowl Saturday is usually the biggest day of our business year. The most we've ever sold on a Super Bowl Saturday was 203 big screens. We were driving all over heck. We were delivering until 1 a.m., and then started again at 4 a.m. We had people coming in at midnight.''

What kind of big screen does the the King have back in the castle?

``I have an 80-inch Mitsubishi big screen I bought about five years ago.''

These puppies are pretty pricey. How much do people typically spend here?

``Most people spend about $2,700 to get their big screen, on up to about $4,700. That's kind of the range.''

That's a big expense.

``There is no big expense. At Paul's, there's no payments for 18 months with no interest. Say you buy one for $2,500. Your payment is $75 a month. What can you do that's going to give your family the enjoyment of a big-screen TV? What is there that you go out and enjoy?

``You could go out and buy a mountain cabin. How often are you going to go to it? Go buy a sail boat. How often are you going to go sailing? But when you buy that big screen - and by the way, Steve, we have a truck going to your city tonight. And I should caution you when the guy came here and interviewed me for Forbes magazine - we were featured in a big article in Forbes - the next day he did buy a big screen.''

You mean this is not the first time you've been interviewed by a hot- shot, big-time journalist?

``You're the biggest.''

Did that lesser guy from Forbes get his big screen wholesale?

``He got a friend's price.''

Do you personally still sell?

``Not anymore. I love selling, because what you're doing if you sell someone a big-screen TV is, you're helping them to make a decision that's going to make them and their family happy. There is no one - no one - who is unhappy they bought a big-screen TV. How many things could you sell that there is no buyer's remorse Definition
Buyer's remorse is an emotional condition whereby a person feels remorse or regret after a purchase. It is frequently associated with the purchase of higher value items such as property, cars, computers, jewelry, etc.
 whatsoever?''

You're making a ton of money off this game, so will you watch the Super Bowl?

``I am definitely going to watch the Super Bowl, because there are always great commercials. And sometimes they have a great game.''
