``It's an exceptional activity,'' said Lowell White, 57, of Lancaster, who works with the Murrells Living Program. ``When you bring that type of awareness, you bring about a healing process.''

The event began Jan. 10 in Arcadia when a ceremonial torch was lit. Since then, the torch has been carried across the county before reaching the Antelope Valley on Saturday.

``It really exemplifies a day of peace,'' White added. ``You can see the effort out there.''

`It's about peace, unity and a whole lot of love,'' said David Hairston, 32, of Victorville, a juvenile crew instructor and probation officer. While the relay is conducted annually, Saturday marked the first time the race has entered the Antelope Valley.

``Antelope Valley has never had anything to uplift its morale,'' said Hairston, ``so bringing it here gives the Antelope Valley a new look. We're bringing togetherness and unity within one community.''
