KINDER, SIMPLER, FUNNER? SWINE FLEW FOR COUNTY FAIR OPENING.

POMONA - The cows have come home and the pigs are flying - literally.

The 79th Los Angeles County Fair The Los Angeles County Fair (also called simply the L.A. County Fair) is an annual event held in the Fairplex in Pomona, California, held every September. It is a carnival with rides, merchants, food vendors, cooking contests, and livestock. The 2007 L.A.  opened Friday with Thummer the pig arriving at Fairplex from the sky.

The fair's mascot MASCOT - Modular Approach to Software Construction Operation and Test: a method for software design aimed at real-time embedded systems from the Royal Signals and Research Establishment, UK.  since 1948, Thummer - in this case, a costumed 51- year-old Kirk Bastian of St. George, Utah St. George is a city located in the southwestern part of the U.S. state of Utah, and the county seat of Washington County, Utah.GR6 It is the principal city of and is included in the St. George, Utah Metropolitan Statistical Area.  - donned a parachute and jumped from 4,500 feet above the Yellow Gate entrance.

``I'm from Missouri and I've never seen a pig fly,'' quipped Marjorie Best Marjorie Best (10 April 1903 – 14 June 1997) was an American Hollywood costume designer best known for her period designs.

``Where are all the promises, now that the pigs are flying?'' joked Adam Shere, 19, of Anaheim.

The theme of the 2001 Fair is ``Kinder. Simpler. Funner,'' and opening- day fair goers capitalized on the $1 admission on Friday.

Officials couldn't supply attendance numbers, but said they had expected more visitors for Friday's opening than on opening day last year, when the fair kicked off on a Thursday.

``We've got a great crowd out there,'' said Wendy Talarico, fair spokeswoman.

``I'm an annual visitor every year. I'm a quilter, so I love the home and garden area,'' Molina said.

``There's something for everybody,'' she said. ``It's educational, it's entertainment. It's everything.''

On Saturday and Sunday, a ``Bounce Back Coupon'' will be given with every full-paid adult admission that can be used for free admission Monday through Thursday.

Talarico added that the chance to get away from busy lives is also a good reason to come.

``Today, life is so hectic, everyone is running around a mile a minute,'' she said. ``At the fair, they leave all that behind and spend quality time with family and friends and just have a kinder, simpler, funner time.''

The fair runs through Sept. 23.
