Monday to Santa's Helpers, a volunteer group that, for 13 years, has annually provided gift packages for low-income parents to give to their children.

``I can't express my appreciation,'' said Zella Stone, director of Santa's Helpers. ``It's wonderful.''

This is the fourth year that Shadow Hills students have collected used bikes and toys for the nonprofit A corporation or an association that conducts business for the benefit of the general public without shareholders and without a profit motive.

``The kids really get into it,'' said teacher Lynn Ohren, who organized the contest. ``Yeah, some of the teachers give extra-credit points ... but the teachers talk about what's behind the Santa's Helpers, why are we doing this and what do Santa's Helpers do? And that allows the kids to think: Yeah, I can make a difference. It's not donating money. It's not buying anything. It's just bringing stuff I don't use.''

For 13-year-old Jessica Porges, donating Legos and Disney videos was more than just participating in a school contest.

``I wanted to help some kids get presents at Christmas, because I know I'm happy when I get presents, and so it's really great that we get to do this and help kids out when they don't (have) anything'' Jessica said.

Overall, donations to the Santa's Helpers are down this year, said Ohren.

``They have tried to get other schools in the Antelope Valley to participate, and no one has ever taken them up on it but us,'' said Ohren.

Help also came this year from Boy Scouts Boy Scouts, organization of boys 11 to 17 years old, founded (1907) in Great Britain by Sir Robert (later Lord) Baden-Powell. It was incorporated in 1910 in the United States, where its appearance was connected with earlier organizations—the Sons of Daniel , who collected more than 2,000 new and used books and organized a toy drive.

``The accomplishments that you feel are so rewarding because you're working with other nonprofit groups. You're working with organizations. You're working with so many other people, and everybody is out for the same purpose, and that purpose is to see that children are not forgotten,'' said Stone, a volunteer for seven years.

On Dec. 13, parents will come through the Santa's Helpers building on Avenue S and pick packages for each of their children. The families are selected from names given to the organization from local schools. In addition to the collected toys and games, Santa's Helpers also receive donations of used clothing from Wal-Mart.

To make a donation, call Stone at (661) 575-1071 or (661) 947-1517. Donations are regularly accepted from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, but Stone requested that donors call first to make sure someone is available to accept the gifts.

``It's a real big thing for a junior high school to accomplish,'' said Ohren.
