KIDS GIVE THUMBS-UP TO NEW OUTFITS; LEARNING EASIER WITH UNIFORM LOOK.Byline: Bhavna Mistry Staff Writer VALENCIA - The first day of school in the 21st Century brought a new look to North Park Elementary- pupils in green sweat shirts, blue jumpers, khaki khaki (kăk`ē, kä`kē) [Hindi,=dust-colored], closely twilled cloth of linen or cotton, dyed a dust color. It was first used (1848) for uniforms for the English regiment of Sir Harry Burnett Lumsden in India and later became the pants and white collared shirts. Tuesday not only marked the return to school after winter break, but the first day of a new voluntary uniform policy. North Park became the second campus in the Saugus Union School District The Saugus Union School District is a school district in the Santa Clarita Valley that serves the Saugus, Valencia, and Canyon Country communities within the city of Santa Clarita, California. As of March 25,2006, it has 15 elementary schools. to recommend uniforms. ``I think it's a beautiful color,'' said second-grader Chelsea Carreon, 7, who wore a blue jumper and white stockings as part of her uniform. ``I like the uniforms.'' Although the school opened in August with a voluntary uniform policy in mind, the change hadn't been adopted by the school's Site Council. It has been since then and Tuesday was Day 1. ``It's just about taking pride in who we are,'' Principal Catherine Laws said. ``We want to do our best in helping kids learn.'' Officials cite statistics that show children do better in school when a uniform policy is in place. ``I like the uniforms because I like to act like others,'' said first-grader Chase Irwin, 6. ``I like to do what others do.'' Second-grader Kiera Carroll wore an NP-monogrammed navy blue skort - shorts with a skirt-style look.
