Honoring the late state Sen. William J. ``Pete'' Knight, the tapestry was commissioned by Palmdale developer Gregg Anderson and made by Mojave custom rug maker Ted Daly.

Today's ceremony will mark the first year of students using the permanent part of the campus, which opened in temporary buildings in 2003.

``This is the first year that the hard building is being opened,'' Principal Brett Neal said. ``We wanted to let our community know. We will do tours of the new theater and the labs. We will have Knight's family here and dignitaries from the Air Force.''

Tours of the school will begin at 9 a.m., followed by the dedication ceremony at 10 a.m.

Knight, who died in May 2004 from leukemia leukemia (lkē`mēə), cancerous disorder of the blood-forming tissues (bone marrow, lymphatics, liver, spleen) characterized by excessive production of immature or mature  at age 74, flew fighter bombers over Vietnam and is most famous for a 1967 flight in an X-15 rocket plane from Edwards Air Force Base Edwards Air Force Base, U.S. military installation, 301,000 acres (121,805 hectares), S Calif., NE of Lancaster; est. 1933. Knight also won a Distinguished Flying Cross for safely landing an X-15 when all of its instruments went dead.

Knight had a 32-year career in the Air Force before he went into politics, serving as mayor of Palmdale and then state assemblyman as·sem·bly·man

An admirer of Knight, Anderson said he commissioned the tapestry after talking with Knight's family. He wouldn't say how much he paid.

Anderson said he ``thought that something dramatic that showed the X-15 at the entrance would be a reminder on a daily basis to students and staff and whoever comes in there the history behind the naming of the school.''

Daly said he created the tapestry working from photographs. Showing the X-15 in the heat-absorbing white coating it wore for Knight's speed record - rather than the more familiar black paint job of earlier flights - the tapestry took him six weeks to complete.
