KIDS FIND NATURAL ROOM FOR CLASS; FUND DONORS, VOLUNTEERS CREATING AMPHITHEATER, GARDEN OF NATIVE PLANTS.

Glenoaks Elementary School elementary school: see school.  officials didn't realize the hillside property at the back of the school was theirs to use until a PTA PTA or parent-teacher association: see parent education.  president asked some questions about the site.

When Karen Saunders looked into the land title, the now-outgoing PTA president learned the property belongs to the school. It had been forgotten because, running straight up into Glenoaks Canyon to the ridge, it was deemed unusable.

But when school officials and Saunders took a close look at it, they realized they could use its natural shape without altering it. The landscape itself suggested an amphitheater.

of constructing an amphitheater, as well as an outdoor classroom and a garden of native California and American plants on the property.

``Kids are excited,'' Saunders said. ``We want this to belong to everybody.''

The amphitheater will consist of a large stage area surrounded by the grassy slope of the hillside for seating. It will be used as an outdoor classroom to complement studies in poetry or Greek theater, as well as a site for larger productions and assemblies.

``A math class might be held out there just to get out of the classroom,'' Saunders suggested.

The native garden, which will extend up the hill to the ridge, will be used to supplement the curriculum in areas such as California history, American Indian American Indian
