KIDS DON'T MIND THE COLD; GYM NEEDS WORK, BUT IT PLAYS.

Byline: Stacy Brown Daily News Staff Writer

It's cold, damp and windy, but Santa Clarita's new warehouse-turned-gymnasium does the job.

City leagues are playing basketball on temporary courts inside a former cosmetic warehouse, part of a 20-acre property purchased by the city for $3 million to house a recreation center.

Mike Norton, the coordinator of youth sports in the Santa Clarita Valley The Santa Clarita Valley is the valley of the Santa Clara River in Southern California. It stretches through Los Angeles County and Ventura County. Its main population center is the city of Santa Clarita. The valley was part of the 48,612-acre (19,672. , said the warehouse was the most practical solution for the city because of the rapidly growing popularity of sports in the area.

``It's not the greatest of surroundings right now, but by using this warehouse we were able to get more than 400 additional kids involved,'' Norton said.

The waiting list for basketball shrank - from 235 last season to just 91 this year - Norton said. He said more than 2,100 children have signed up for teams.

The warehouse-turned-gymnasium is located behind Soledad Canyon Soledad Canyon is a long narrow canyon / valley located in Los Angeles County, California between the cities of Palmdale and Santa Clarita. Norton said the completion date for the gym, which will include a racquetball racquetball, sport played indoors by two or four players, combining elements of court handball and such racket games as squash racquets. ``The originally scheduled completion date was set for June and now it may be August because of the wind and rains,'' Norton said.

Among the more exciting games, which included the Lakers See Lake poets  vs. Sonics and Bulls vs. Raptors, was the Suns against the Pistons.

Matthew Cajigal helped warm the crowds, who had bought cups of coffee and hot chocolate, with three consecutive steals and two incredible baskets in the Suns' 18-10 victory.

Cajigal's uncle, who urged his 8-year-old nephew on, said the Suns star learned from playing with more experienced players.

``His dad taught him a lot and he likes to play with the older kids,'' said Ferdinand Cajigal. ``It's lots of fun watching him and the rest of the kids go at it,'' he said.
