Well, it can now be said that the man knows his enemy - and he is it.

Bennett's best-selling anthology, ``The Book of Virtues,'' has been turned into an animated children's series that will debut Sept. 2 on PBS PBS

Called ``Adventures From the Book of Virtues,'' the show will be the first-ever animated prime-time series on public TV. As with Bennett's book, episodes are drawn from a wide variety of sources - European fairy tales This is a list of fairy tales, the dates of their earliest known printed version, the author and, if known, the collection of tales in which it was published. So, does Bennett's joining forces with television mean he's adopted a ``if-you-can't-beat-'em-join-'em'' mentality? Sort of.

``I have been a critic of a lot of television,'' Bennett told TV critics gathered in Pasadena last month. ``Sometimes you curse the darkness, sometimes you light a candle. I hope this is the candle.''

Bennett also professed himself to be a fan of free speech who is vehemently opposed to censorship, despite his attempts to get trashy talk shows off the air.

``I'm not a V-chipper,'' he said. ``I'm not a regulator. I'm virtually an absolutist on the First Amendment.''

It's just that he doesn't like a lot of what's on What's On (Traditional Chinese: 熒幕八爪娛) is a weekly half-hour TV series that airs on Fairchild Television. Format

television, he said. Of course, he doesn't watch much - his own kids are not allowed to turn on the tube during the week.

But Bennett feels you ``don't have to be an expert'' to know what constitutes bad television. Or good. His show is good, he says.

``The point of this series is to say something I deeply believe - that you can put out very good stuff. And if you put out very good stuff, people will come. They'll come to movie theaters and watch it on television.''
