KIDS / SNEAK PEEK : BAMBI, FRIENDS, ON AND OFF SCREEN.

Memo to all forest creatures: Nap time's over.

It may not be spring yet. The faraway snowcaps may not be melting and the bears may still be in their caves. But, next week, the most familiar and fabled mammals of all time will start running through the forest again. The 55th Anniversary Collector's Edition of ``Bambi'' will go on sale Tuesday, but for only 55 days.

But after you watch the furry forest posse romp in remastered video and jazzed-up THX A design system that provides realistic sound playback for movie and home theater from THX, Ltd., San Rafael, CA (www.thx.com), an independent spin-off from Lucasfilm, Ltd. The THX Sound System was developed during the production of the Return of the Jedi in 1982 and named after George  sound, why not go out and see the real thing?

Somewhere between 6,000 and 10,000 deer hang out in the lush acres of Los Padres National Forest Los Padres National Forest is a forest located in southern and central California, which includes most of the mountainous land along the California coast from Ventura to Monterey, extending inland. Elevations range from sea level to 8,831 feet. . A little hiking and a good eye can help spot Bambi in action.

``You'd see hoof hoof, horny epidermal casing at the end of the digits of an ungulate (hoofed) mammal. In the even-toed ungulates, such as swine, deer, and cattle, the hoof is cloven; in the odd-toed ungulates, such as the horse and the rhinoceros, it is solid.  prints in the mud because of the rain, so you'd be able to tell the locations,'' says Maeton Freel, the forest's wildlife biologist '''

A wildlife biologist is someone who studies wild animals and their habitats.
. ``Like most mammals, they're more active in the early morning.''

So head out early. Just don't expect the real thing to look anything like the singing, twitterpated funsters in Disney's woods.

``It's a cute movie and stuff,'' says Freel, ``but it kind of gives some misrepresentations of what the real world is like.''

Now, Bambi does face plenty of danger (fire, hunters, romantic competition), but he lives in cartoonland. Los Padres National Forest has hungry moutain lions, and droughts killed much of the deer population in the past decade.

``It's not as idyllic of a world,'' he says. ``Mother Nature can be pretty cruel for a lot of animals.''

Two thirds of kids polled have savings accounts, and many find themselves saving for big items they want. Forty percent get raises every year. And the No. 1 reason for not getting allowance on a certain week? Not doing the chores.
