KIDS/SNEAK PEEK ALL ABOUT HARRY POTTER IN ONE BOOK.

Byline: - Nancy Hewitt

Just in case you are one of the folks not overly saturated with Harry Potter, a book devoted to the idiosyncrasies of the young character and his adventures is hitting the market today.

The inaugural edition of ``Beacham's Sourcebooks for Teaching Young Adult Fiction'' focuses on the delightful character brought to life in the four J.K. Rowling books.

``Exploring Harry Potter,'' by historian and children's literary expert Elizabeth D. Schafer, is a 478-page compendium of everything you could ever want to know about Harry Potter, and more.

Schafer admits to be being a Harry Potter fan. ``I read them (the first four volumes) the first time for fun,'' she recalls. ``Then I discovered how rich they are. I really got into them.''

And getting into them meant lots of research on things such as alchemy alchemy (ăl`kəmē), ancient art of obscure origin that sought to transform base metals (e.g., lead) into silver and gold; forerunner of the science of chemistry. , history, mythology, literature and other subjects referenced in the novels.

Schafer maintains that the Harry Potter books appeal to all ages. ``Harry is a moral mentor,'' she says. ``He teaches kids to help others. The books help with school work, with ways of thinking.''

``Since Harry Potter books are so popular, it (this book) will help kids realize that all of literature has these themes,'' Schafer says.

Schafer also shares references and parallels to legends, fairy tales This is a list of fairy tales, the dates of their earliest known printed version, the author and, if known, the collection of tales in which it was published. It should be noted, however, that not all stories listed below would be categorized as fairy tales by a strict definition  and more. For example, there is a lightning bolt Lightning bolt may refer to
  • Lightning discharge, electrical discharge within clouds or between clouds and the ground
  • Thunderbolt, a traditional expression for a discharge of lightning or a symbolic representation thereof
branded on Harry's forehead that has a mythical origin. The lightning bolt is a symbol of the Greek god Zeus.

Yet another feature of Schafer's book is discovering the origins and meanings of Rowling's clever character names. For example, Argus Filch filch

Then there is Hedwig, Harry's snowy white Terence Charles "Snowy" White (born 3 March 1948, in Barnstaple, Devon) is an English guitarist, mostly known for having played for Thin Lizzy (permanent member from 1979 to 1981) and for Pink Floyd (as a back-up player; he was first invited to join the band through Europe and the  owl, that is named for a medieval saint.

Schafer is working on a source book based on L. Frank Baum's Oz books. The second volume of the Beacham series is being done by another author, and it will focus on C.S. Lewis' ``Chronicles of Narnia'' series.

``Beacham's Sourcebooks for Teaching Young Adult Fiction: Exploring Harry Potter'' is available beginning today at local booksellers or online at www.beachampublishing.com. Suggested retail price of the book is $24.95.
