A few steps away, his watchful mother, Chona, held the precious bag of candies he won in a game.

It wasn't just an ordinary carnival. Kevin and his mother, who did not want to give their last name, are residents of the Valley Shelter for the homeless in North Hollywood. The carnival was especially for the needy families.

``This is great for the kids,'' Chona said about the carnival.

More than 50 children and their parents turned out for the fun and games "Fun and Games" is an episode of the original The Outer Limits television show. It first aired on 30 March, 1964, during the first season. Opening narration

And they had one young woman to thank for the afternoon of fun - Sherman Oaks resident Darya Pollack.

Pollack organized the day's event over the last six months in an effort to earn the Gold Award, the highest honor given to Girl Scouts Girl Scouts, recreational and service organization founded (1912) in Savannah, Ga., by Mrs. Juliette Gordon Low (1860–1927). It was originally modeled after the Boy Scouts and Girl Guides, organizations created in Great Britain by Sir Robert Baden-Powell during  after years of community service work and leadership training.

``The Girl Scouts has become one of the biggest things in my life,'' said Pollack, 18, a recent graduate of North Hollywood High School North Hollywood High School, originally called Lankershim High School when it opened in 1927, is a secondary school in North Hollywood in Los Angeles, California. The school mascot is the husky, and the school colors are blue, white, grey. . ``To be able to earn the award and to help the community gives me a good feeling.''

``This award is a recognition of the immense dedication and effort that goes into being a Girl Scout,'' Kelly said.

More than 30 volunteers spent the day making crafts and clowning around with the kids. Local stores donated candy, party favors and ice cream.

``She did all the work herself,'' said Donaji Rodriguez, children's program coordinator at the Valley Shelter.

The shelter houses 32 homeless families, including more than 60 kids, in a 90-day residential program.
