``Superman'' actress Margot Kidder was under observation Wednesday at a psychiatric center after being found dirty, dazed daze

and fearful in a back yard, claiming she had been stalked and assaulted.

``She was afraid she was being followed. She was frightened for her life,'' police Sgt. Rick Young said of Kidder's demeanor when she was found Tuesday behind a stranger's home in this suburban Los Angeles city.

``We do not feel there has been a crime at this time,'' Young said. ``She claimed that she was followed and assaulted but we found no evidence of that.''

The 47-year-old Canadian-born actress had been missing for three days when she was found crouching in the bushes by the owner of the white, two-story house, located in a quiet neighborhood of well-tended homes.

Kidder, who has battled health and financial problems in recent years, appeared ``frightened and paranoid'' and seemed to have cut her hair to alter her appearance, Young said.

``We asked her who was following her. She wouldn't say,'' Young said.

The home's owner, Elaine Lamb, refused to answer reporters' questions Wednesday.

during her three-day disappearance. She had scratches and bruises but Young said police believe she received them from hiding in bushes. He said tests showed no sign of drugs or alcohol in her system at the time she was found.

Kidder was last seen at Los Angeles International Airport “LAX” redirects here. For other uses, see LAX (disambiguation).

The report was made by a man who was a business associate of Kidder's, Burbank Sgt. Scott Wilson said.

The Theatre Guild, a producer of plays, said Kidder was supposed to teach an acting class in Thatcher Thatch·er   , Margaret Hilda. Baroness. Born 1925.

Kidder, who played Lois Lane in four ``Superman'' movies, had been living in Livingston, Mont., and was in Los Angeles on business, Young said.

Kidder's career peaked in the 1970s and '80s with the ``Superman'' series. Her co-star, Christopher Reeve, was paralyzed par·a·lyze

from the neck down in a horse-riding accident last May.

Reeve issued a statement Wednesday, offering to help Kidder.

``If anything unfortunate happened to Margot Kidder, my heart goes out to her,'' the statement said. ``If there's anything I can do, I will. She is a dear friend who has always been there for me, and I would do anything to help her.''

Kidder also appeared in the films ``The Great Waldo Pepper'' and ``The Amityville Horror,'' and took up political causes.

An October 1990 accident while filming a television series left her in persistent pain because of neck injuries. She occasionally needed a wheelchair.

She told People magazine in 1992 that she took pills to ward off the pain, but those left her mind ``muddied.''

An arrest warrant was issued for Kidder on Oct. 1, 1992, after she failed to appear in court for arraignment A criminal proceeding at which the defendant is officially called before a court of competent jurisdiction, informed of the offense charged in the complaint, information, indictment, or other charging document, and asked to enter a plea of guilty, not guilty, or as otherwise permitted  on a misdemeanor charge of driving without a valid driver's license and an infraction Violation or infringement; breach of a statute, contract, or obligation.
