KEY TARGETS ARE WOMEN : EXPERTS CLAIM THEY TEND TO BE NATURAL-BORN SHOOTERS.

But it quickly becomes apparent that she means business when she braces the mammoth 14-inch barrel of her modified 7mm pistol against her lower right leg.

While demonstrating the unusual Creedmore stance - flat on her back, bent knees touching, with her left arm supporting her head - Saturday at the first Angeles Expo '96 shooting exhibition at Little Tujunga Canyon's Angeles Shooting Ranges, Cotrell aligned the front and rear sights.

``The Creedmore position is used for accuracy and steadiness,'' said Cotrell, 51, of Arleta, a 14-year veteran metal silhouette shooter who has won several state and national championships. ``It just takes a little time to get used to it.''

And she is only too eager to help anyone who wants to try. Cotrell is among the area's emissaries of outdoor target shooting - a tight-knit group of women from various Southland south·land or South·land

``When I was a beginner I had an idol, another woman, whom I wanted to be like,'' said Cotrell, who with her husband, Ron, is a charter member of the San Fernando-based L.A. Silhouette Club. ``She took me under her wing and helped me until one day I was able to beat her.

``Now, I help other young women accomplish what I did. This sport is all about camaraderie. If another woman needs help, I'm going to help her.''

Experts agree that women tend to be natural shooters who can excel rapidly with regular practice; they usually approach the sport for fun, rather than heated competition. With a little direction from seasoned shooters, they can soon be on their way to enjoying an exhilarating hobby.

Like many women shooters, Nancy Jarrard of Sun Valley got into the sport because of her husband. Although she shoots all types of targets, Jarrard prefers sporting clays Sporting Clays is a form of clay pigeon shooting. Often described as golf with a shotgun, the sport differs from trap and skeet shooting in that:

``I'm mainly into it because of the enjoyment and relaxation of it,'' said the 40-something Jarrard, who has been shooting for four years. ``I like being out there in the open. And every target is different. It's my free-spirit time.''

Arcadia's Margie Gaboury started shooting because she tired of watching her boyfriend have all the fun when they went to the range.

``I used to just pull the clays for my boyfriend, and I always thought I couldn't do it,'' she said. ``I'm not really the outdoors type of person. But I found out it's not that difficult, it just looks it.

``To me, it's relaxing. I would encourage more women to get into it.''

One of the main attractions of shooting is that there are no age limits. No one is too young or too old to begin shooting. As long as children can understand the concepts of shooting, they may participate with their parents, according to according to

``I tend to go up to the firing line and say `I can't do very well,' '' said Smith, who has been shooting for a year and a half. ``But then I listen to what Lee tells me to do and not what men tell me, and I end up hitting the target.''

Once women gain confidence, self-fulfillment from a job well done is icing on the cake.
