The French army, better-equipped and far larger than the Mexican army, had been sent by Napoleon III to conquer Mexico. ! Cinco de Mayo, or May 5, commemorates Mexico's defeat of a much larger, invading French force in the town of Puebla in 1862. After three months of fighting, French troops eventually captured the town and occupied Mexico until 1867. Cinco de Mayo is sometimes confused with Mexico's Independence Day, which is celebrated on Sept. 16. That date commemorates the start of Mexico's 11-year war of independence against Spain, which began Sept. 16, 1810.
