KERNEN LIKES CSUN PLAY.

Byline: Kevin Acee Daily News Staff Writer

Bill Kernen seemed in no hurry to get off the phone.

He sounded happy, content. He had spent about 20 minutes talking about himself and New York City New York City: see New York, city.

. And now he wanted to know more about some of his old players.

"I do feel a lot removed," he said. "We don't get a lot of news from California California (kăl'ĭfôr`nyə), most populous state in the United States, located in the Far West; bordered by Oregon (N), Nevada and, across the Colorado River, Arizona (E), Mexico (S), and the Pacific Ocean (W). ."

Kernen, the Cal State Northridge baseball coach from 1989 to 1995 before retiring in August to become a playwright, is living on Manhattan's Upper West Side and taking classes at Columbia University Columbia University, mainly in New York City; founded 1754 as King's College by grant of King George II; first college in New York City, fifth oldest in the United States; one of the eight Ivy League institutions. .

"I'm having a great time," he said. "I've really been working hard. It's a lot of studying and reading and writing. A lot of solitary solitary /sol·i·tary/ (sol´i-tar?e)

The last time he and former assistant and now interim head coach Mike Batesole spoke was when the team returned from Texas in the beginning of February. But he got a few calls from friends to update him during the Matadors' 14-game winning streak Noun 1. winning streak - a streak of wins

"I'm really happy for them," he said. "We thought (this) year would be really good. Anybody would be surprised by what's happening, but we knew it would be a good team."

Kernen, 47, said he might leave Columbia soon, at the suggestion of his professors, and join a theater company as a playwright in residence. He also plans a trip west soon to visit friends and see his old team.
