KEPPEL FILLS ITS TOP SPOT ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT TO MOVE UP.

Byline: Karen Maeshiro Staff Writer

PEARBLOSSOM - Rather than hire a consultant to recruit a new superintendent, Keppel Union School District trustees have promoted Assistant Superintendent Assistant Superintendent, or Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), was a rank used by police forces in the British Empire. It was usually the lowest rank that could be held by a European officer, most of whom joined the police at this rank.  Tom Niekamp to replace the outgoing schools chief.

Niekamp, 54, will replace Joseph Cox Joseph Lovell Cox (born June 28, 1886, Pietermaritzburg, Natal, died July 4, 1971, Bulawayo, Rhodesia) was a South African cricketer who played in three Tests between 1913 and 1914. , who is resigning to take a similar job with Colonial Heights Colonial Heights, city (1990 pop. 16,064), in, but independent of, Chesterfield co., SE Va.; inc. as a city 1948. ``I think what is interesting is the appointment comes as we receive the Stanford 9 test results. I am looking at those and am pleased to say we are showing growth in the last two years, in some areas very significant growth,'' Niekamp said Friday.

``We are doing things right. My first task is to keep the ball rolling and keep them moving and maybe extend them into some other areas,'' he said.

During a special meeting Thursday night, the board accepted Cox's resignation, which takes effect Sept. 14. Cox replaced Superintendent Jean Fuller two years ago.

Niekamp has served as the assistant superintendent of business services for the Keppel district for the past nine years.

The board has not negotiated Niekamp's salary, but Cox earned about $108,000 a year.

The board wanted someone with a business background in the top administrative post, given the current fiscal climate, energy crisis and declining enrollment, a district statement said.

``We had already been through the process two years ago, and he was very close in the running with Dr. Cox at the time. We've got declining enrollment and an energy crisis, so we don't want to spend a lot of money when we have someone qualified right here. I think the district is in good hands,'' trustee Maxine Griffin said.

Niekamp previously worked as a camp counselor for handicapped youth for four summers while working toward his bachelor's degree in psychology from California State University, Northridge CSUN offers a variety of programs leading to bachelor's degrees in 61 fields and master's degrees in 42 fields.
