KENTUCKY DERBY NOTEBOOK: BAZE HEADS BACK TO DERBY ON MAD.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Tyler Baze Tyler Baze (born October 19, 1982 in Seattle, Washington) is an American Champion jockey. Born into a racing family, both of his parents were jockeys as is his uncle, Gary Baze. His second cousin is U.S. Racing Hall of Fame jockey, Russell Baze. , the 22-year-old emerging star among Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  jockeys, was named Tuesday to ride Don't Get Mad in Saturday's Kentucky Derby.

It will be Baze's second Kentucky Derby. He finished 14th aboard Indian Express in 2003.

Trainer Ron Ellis made the announcement a day after Don't Get Mad was assured a spot in the 20-horse Derby because of the withdrawal of injured Consolidator.

Baze, of the Washington state racing family that produced Hall of Fame jockey Russell Baze, rode Don't Get Mad in all three of his Santa Anita starts this year, running second to Fusaichi Rock Star in the San Vicente, third behind Consolidator in the San Felipe and sixth behind Buzzards Bay in the Santa Anita Derby The Santa Anita Derby is an American Grade 1 thoroughbred horse race for three-year-olds run each April at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California and carries a purse of $750,000. .

Gary Stevens rode Don't Get Mad in last Saturday's Derby Trial at Churchill Downs when the colt rallied from last to win by seven lengths and earn a Derby berth. Stevens had already committed to Florida Derby runner-up Noble Causeway for the Derby.

--Hey, isn't that ...: Hall of Fame jockey Angel Cordero Jr. never spent much time in the stable area before any of his 17 Kentucky Derbys. Now 62, Cordero is enjoying the view as an exercise rider for trainer Todd Pletcher.

Producer/director Billy Rappaport is developing a script to capture the colorful story of the horse who overcame a near-fatal injury to win last year's Kentucky Derby and Preakness.

No word yet on who will play the lead.

The top California representative is Memorette (Kent Desormeaux), second to Sweet Catomine in the Santa Anita Oaks Santa Anita Oaks is an American Grade I Thoroughbred horse race held annually in mid March at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California. Open to three-year-old fillies willing to race 8.5 furlongs (1 1/16 miles) on the dirt, it currently offers a purse of $300,000. .
