KENT TEACHER HONORED BY U S WEST

SEATTLE, June 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Jim Hasz, a teacher at Pine Tree Elementary School in Kent, Wash., has been honored for his superior teaching as part of the U S WEST Outstanding Teacher Program for Washington state, U S WEST announced today. Hasz's selection caps a three month search for teachers in Washington who truly fulfill the program's theme, "Reaching Beyond Classroom Walls."
As one of Washington's outstanding teachers, Hasz received a $1,000 award to be used for professional development. He received his award in a special presentation on June 1 in Seattle. At the same presentation, Yvonne Ullas, a teacher from Naches Primary School in Yakima, was named Outstanding Teacher from Washington and received a $15,000 award.
The U S WEST Outstanding Teacher Program is part of the $20 million U S WEST Education Initiative, a project developed to recognized excellence in education and to support programs and projects that have potential for improving the educational environments in the 14-state region served by U S WEST.
Hasz has taught second through fifth grade students a Pine Tree Elementary School since 1980. The parent who nominated him for the award, has this to say about Hasz: "Jim has created a child-sized town on 2 1/2 acres which he has dedicated to the children and to learning. Here the children are allowed to be in charge and to accept responsibility of being in charge, making sure that things in the town run smoothly and properly. The children graduate from Jim's class knowing they can accomplish anything that they set their minds to because Jim has given them the self-esteem we all must possess to survive and succeed in this world."
Hasz received his Bachelors of Art and Masters Degree in Elementary Education from Humboldt State University.
Judith Cherin, a teacher at Fairmount Elementary School in Everett, and Rhonda Colbert, a teacher at Tonasket High School in Tonasket were also honored by U S WEST for their outstanding work and each received $1,000 awards.
