KENNETH J. O'DONNELL, PRESIDENT AND CEO OF NEIC RECEIVES NEW JERSEY ENTREPRENEUR OF THE YEAR AWARD

SECAUCUS, N.J., June 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Kenneth J. O'Donnell, president and CEO of National Electronic Information Corporation (NEIC), the nation's leading electronic data interchange (EDI) healthcare network, has received the New Jersey Entrepreneur of the Year Award, sponsored by Ernst & Young and Merrill Lynch, earning recognition in the "Turnaround" category.
"Mr. O'Donnell was selected by the panel for his success in applying the classic corporate turnaround approach to NEIC. Until O'Donnell's appointment in 1987, NEIC had experienced seven consecutive years of disappointing performance," said Stephen Gatto, partner, Ernst and Young. Gatto cited O'Donnell's ability to develop a clear vision of the future and to share and implement this vision with NEIC's employees. "This enabled NEIC to achieve six years of unparalleled growth -- making it a profitable entity and an acknowledged industry leader in healthcare EDI."
The awards were presented at a banquet held last night in New Brunswick. The awards program, founded by the professional services firm of Ernst & Young, and co-sponsored by Inc.. Magazine and Merrill Lynch, Business Journal of New Jersey, First Fidelity Bank, New Jersey Business & Industry Association and Smith, Stratton Wise, Heher & Brennan, honors successful entrepreneurs. With this award O'Donnell is now eligible for one of five national awards and The Entrepreneur Of The Year award.
"I am deeply honored by this award but the credit really belongs to NEIC's employees whose dedication, hard work and endless enthusiasm are responsible for our achievement," said O'Donnell. He also thanked the employees who submitted his name to the judges for consideration.
He explains that NEIC electronically links healthcare providers -- physicians, hospitals, laboratories and others -- and health insurance payors for the rapid transmission of claims and other data. More than 130,000 providers currently submit claims and other associated transactions through NEIC and its network of 500 vendors to member payors, including managed care entities. Taken together, these payors provide healthcare coverage to over 110 million Americans.
Under O'Donnell's direction, NEIC's electronic claim volume has risen from 750,000 in 1987 to a projected 35 million by the end of 1993. His most recent achievement has been the design and implementation of the NEIC Healthcare Information Network(SM) (HCIN). This leading-edge system provides on-line/real-time electronic transactions between healthcare providers, payors and others. HCIN helps reduce paperwork hassles and administrative costs in the growing managed care environment.
NEIC is headquartered in Secaucus, N.J., with offices in Dallas, Chicago, Atlanta, and Los Angeles.
