But following the death of the kennel's owner last week, the refuge is being forced to close its doors and employees are scrambling to find homes for 35 dogs by today.

``If they're still here (on Tuesday), they'll be taken as abandoned animals to a city animal shelter "Dog Pound" redirects here. For the rap group, see Tha Dogg Pound.

An animal shelter is a facility that houses homeless, lost or abandoned animals; primarily a large variety of dogs and cats.
,'' said Richard Contreras, a caretaker at the kennel and the late owner's adopted son. ``It has to be shut down, and it has to be put up for sale.''

But animal rights advocates are doubtful the animals can be placed in time. Many of the dogs are older and not as highly sought after as puppies.

``They'll be killed for sure,'' said Barbara Fabricant fab·ri·cant

Frank Parsons, 87, owner of the kennel at 9925 Canoga Ave., died of heart failure Thursday.

On Friday, employees showed up for work to a notice from the executor executor n. the person appointed to administer the estate of a person who has died leaving a will which nominates that person. Unless there is a valid objection, the judge will appoint the person named in the will to be executor.  of Parsons' estate ordering all the dogs to be removed by today.

While the notice specifically mentioned the dogs, it said nothing of the 150 cats housed at the kennel by a group called Mew for Help, Contreras said.

Carol Winner, who leases space at the kennel for Mew for Help, said although her group isn't specifically named in the notice, it's just a matter of time before she will have to find homes for her cats as well.

``I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

when they're going to give me the ax,'' she said.

Winner said the executor of the estate for Parsons, Alfred Funk, has been vague about the future of the kennel, making it difficult for her to plan. Funk was unavailable for comment late Sunday.

Parsons and Funk were longtime friends, and animal rights advocates had no idea Parsons or Funk had plans to close the kennel so soon, said Fabricant. ``This is all news to us,'' she said.

Contreras, who has lived and worked at the kennel since Parsons took him in 15 years ago, said he is also surprised the property is being sold so quickly.

Parsons had always told Contreras he would like to see him continue to operate the kennel, even though it had been losing money the last few years, Contreras said.

Contreras said he expects to share in the proceeds from the sale of the property because Parsons had named him in the will. But that doesn't solve the problem of finding homes for 35 dogs by today's end, he said.

Contreras is asking anyone willing to adopt a pet to call the kennel at (818) 882-1955.
